Warner Brothers' Alan Horn Responds to Harry Potter Fans

Daniel Radcliffe and Alan Horn

In an attempt to calm the angry fans, Warner Brothers President and COO Alan Horn (pictured above) has released a public statement regarding the surprising release date change of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. As we all know, Warner Bros moved the release of Half-Blood Prince from November this year all the way to July 17th next summer, causing outrage amongst Harry Potter fans. We ran a follow-up article last Friday that outlined the anger that the fans, and myself, were experiencing in response to the move, and questioned whether Warner Bros might end up moving it back in fear of protests or boycotts. This obviously shows they're not going to budge, but does show that they're at least responsive.

Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro Writing Hobbit Themselves

There And Back Again...

Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have officially announced that they're writing The Hobbit and its follow-up themselves. I never thought so much buzz could come from an announcement about writing, but that's what happens when it's The Hobbit! The news first hit on TheOneRing.net, where Guillermo confirmed that writing had begun on Hobbit. Additionally, reports from Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news and added that they originally had been searching for a writer to tackle the monumental task, but decided that there was no one better suited for the job than they are. Joining the two will be Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who wrote the screenplays for the first three Lord of the Rings with Jackson.

Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Finding Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. is one of two big actors coming up who will play the legendary Sherlock Holmes on the big screen, the other being Sacha Baron Cohen. As we announced first back in early July, British filmmaker Guy Ritchie has cast Downey Jr. in his film about the classic British super sleuth and plans to show us a much different version of Holmes than we might all be familiar with. Premiere caught up briefly with Downey Jr. recently and talked with the actor about the kind of character he'd be playing, who he says is a buff bare-knuckle boxer and martial arts expert in addition to a detective. Although they're not shooting until October, it's refreshing to hear him talking about finding thi character already.

Tyrese Confirms a Role in A-Team Remake - But Which One?

Tyrese Gibson

Back in May we brought you news that Tyrese Gibson might step up and assume the mo-hawk, gold jewelry-wearing crown of '80s hero B.A. Baracus (originally played by Mr. T) in John Singleton's A-Team remake. Latino Review updates us today on that front with a eloquent quote from the former fashion model: "Soon as that script come back in and they tweak that thing out, we gonna go ahead and get movin'." I can just see Tyrese turning to Murdoch's character and retorting, "You crazy fool!," can't you? But I wouldn't count your gold chains just yet, according to Latino Review. The outlet draws a somewhat stretch conclusion from Tyrese's short comment on the subject - namely that since the actor didn't reiterate assuming Mr. T's role, he might actually play another character in the film. Does that rumor hold water? Maybe.

Don Mancini Updates Details on the Child's Play Reboot

Chucky

By the end of 2020, we'll probably see every horror movie remade, it's inevitable. As we first announced last October, Child's Play is one of the latest horror franchises being rebooted. The same producers who brought us all five of the previous Child's Play movies are doing this reboot, which should be a good sign, considering that doesn't usually happen. Additionally, Don Mancini, who wrote all of the Child's Play movies and directed Seed of Chucky, is both writing and directing this reboot, too. Quint from Ain't It Cool News caught up with Don and producer David Kirschner to talk about the Special Edition DVD and ended up spending some time chatting about the reboot - and it actually doesn't sound that bad.

New W. Posters Discovered - Anyone Can Grow Up to Be President

New W. Posters

With the Democratic National Convention starting up in Denver in just about a week, Lionsgate is smartly targeting that city for some extra promo boosts for Oliver Stone's W. I'm not sure that pasting posters of Bush around a city full of democrats will actually help, but it is a good way to grab the attention of politicos and democrats alike. We've finally got high res clean versions of the two posters, in addition to a billboard, and they're rather awkward. I'm liking these a lot more than anything else we've seen for W. previously, but I really still don't know what to think about this movie! Good? Bad? What is Oliver Stone thinking?!

RocknRolla Gets Early Praise - Guy Ritchie Confirms Sequels

RocknRolla

Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla's domestic future may be uncertain, but we're hearing from across the pond today that the forthcoming film - arguably a true return to the kinetic complexity of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch - is "brilliant" and "absolute class." Bear in mind, we're hearing this from the oft-suspect U.K. publication The Sun (warning: source story contains a small spoiler), but I have no doubt in my mind that the chaps are correct this time around. The praise is some of the first to hit the mainstream, but it's not necessarily surprising. What is an eye-opener is that Ritchie has revealed that he's "written a second and sketched out a third" film already! We've know the film's trilogy direction for some time, but it's great to hear work is actually being put against those early claims.

Tuesday Discussion: Where Do You Want to See Superman Go?

Superman

Instead of just reporting this news today, I thought I'd open it up to some discussion, since that seems the logical conclusion anyway. Warner Brothers and DC Comics have encountered a dilemma with Superman. Christopher Nolan took DC's other popular character, Batman, and turned him into a huge success, as well all know. But in 2006, right after Batman Begins the year before, Bryan Singer's Superman Returns not only didn't perform as well as they had hoped it would, but most didn't like what Singer did with the character and the story. That left them in a tough spot - continue with Singer or dump his series and start from scratch. Most people are crying out for another Superman, but they're not sure what to do. We've provided numerous updates on the Superman situation, but Anne Thompson from Variety has the latest.

Coen Brothers Already Finshed Casting A Serious Man

Michael Stuhlbarg and Richard Kind

The Coen Brothers are definitely on a roll recently. Not that they were ever at a point where they weren't making great movies in their 24 year career, but coming off of No Country for Old Men, they're some of the most well-respected directors around and their next film already looks fantastic. Joel and Ethan also never take a break. The two have already finished casting their next feature film after Burn After Reading, a period black comedy called A Serious Man. They've cast both Michael Stuhlbarg (seen above left), a Tony-nominated stage actor with little cinematic acting experience, and Richard Kind (seen above right), a character actor whose name you won't necessarily recognize, but his face and voice you will.

Worth Watching - Aug 19: The Secret Life of Bees Trailer

The Secret Life of Bees Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming film The Secret Life of Bees has arrived and it's rather riveting. I'll be doing my best to catch this up at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Set in South Carolina in 1964, the film is the moving tale of a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. She flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a small town where she meets the Boatwright sisters and finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping, honey and the Black Madonna. It stars Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Alicia Keys. While this does look like a very fine film and I am interested in seeing it, I'm a bit concerned that it won't be anything unique, just another drama.

Tom Cruise and Sam Raimi Working Together on Sleeper?!

Tom Cruise and Sam Raimi Working Together on Sleeper?!

Yep it's true. Sam Raimi is producing an adaptation of Wildstorm's "Sleeper" comic book with Tom Cruise apparently "loosely attached" to star. Obviously Cruise's involvement is not set in stone, but his interest has boosted this comic book adaptation into the spotlight. The story centers on an operative whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him impervious to pain and allows him to pass it on to others through skin contact. He is placed undercover in a villainous organization by an intelligence agency and falls for a member of the group, named Miss Misery. Reminds me a lot of Pitt and Jolie's Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Raimi is producing the film alongside of Josh Donen separate from his horror company Ghost House Pictures.

Short New TV Spot for Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla

RocknRolla TV Spot

In light of the recent studio troubles that RocknRolla is having, we've got a great new TV spot to share with you. Watching this makes me forget about all of those troubles and focus on the good aspects. Luckily I get to see RocknRolla next week before I had off to the Toronto Film Festival and I couldn't be more excited. What is a RocknRolla? Well Guy Ritchie told our own Bob $tencil that a RocknRolla could be "the kind of guy that has sex while flying a plane." But if you're looking for the real answer to that question, this TV spot answers it in a thick English accent. Thanks to Empire for launching this. "RocknRolla starts with a Russian mobster establishing a real estate scam to make millions of pounds, which brings the various ne'er-do-wells of the London crime scene out looking for their slice of the cash." Sound good? Take a look…

Early Teaser Posters for Baz Luhrmann's Australia

Early Teaser Posters for Baz Luhrmann's Australia

A few early teaser posters for Baz Luhrmann's Australia have been discovered courtesy of MoviesOnline. We've been featuring various gorgeous photos from Australia over the past nine months and these three posters have that same beautifully epic look to them. They seem fairly legit, but they didn't come from any trusted studio source and are quite low quality, so I can't say they're 100% confirmed. That "A" logo in the lower right and lack of any other wording or logos is also quite peculiar, but they still look good. Take a look now and hopefully we'll see finalized versions from Fox sometime in the near future.

Warner Bros' Watchmen in Serious Legal Trouble!

Watchmen

Back in February we posted an article titled Fox Suing Warner Brothers Over Watchmen Movie that outlined a legal case that 20th Century Fox was fighting against Warner Brothers for the rights to the Watchmen movie. At the time it didn't create too much buzz because back in February, I was one of the only ones who had visited the set and knew what we'd be seeing in that amazing teaser trailer later on. However, Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood has an update today and it's not good, not good at all. "A federal judge has denied a Warner Bros motion to dismiss 20th Century Fox's legal battle over the rights to develop, produce and distribute a film based on the graphic novel Watchmen." Apparently WB is in some serious legal trouble if this doesn't get straighted out, but details are a bit hazy at the moment.

Two More Burn After Reading Character Vids - Osbourne and Linda

John Malkovich in Burn After Reading

A few weeks back we shared two hilarious character teaser videos for The Coen Brother's Burn After Reading. One of them was for Chad, played by Brad Pitt, the other was for Harry, played by George Clooney. Today we've got two more: one for Osbourne, played by John Malkovich, the other for Linda, played by Frances McDormand. Seeing Malkovich yell is easily one of the funniest things to watch. I thought Brad Pitt was a hilarious addition to this film, but Malkovich looks fantastic and the two play off of each other so well. This looks like it may even be the funniest comedy of the year and another brilliant film from the Coen Brothers, which is amazing considering No Country for Old Men was just last year! How do they do it?! Either way, take a look at these two new hilarious Burn After Reading character teasers.

Paul W. S. Anderson No Longer Interested in Spy Hunter?

Spy Hunter

Paul W.S. Anderson has his bloody car battle, Death Race, bowing this weekend, which I can't wait to check out. But what about the other car vehicle that Anderson has been tied to since May? If you recall, the Resident Evil director was signed to helm the long-in-negotiation adaptation of the very popular Midway game, Spy Hunter, which centers on a morphing supercar called the Interceptor. As it turns out, Death Race might have killed his drive to direct any other auto-centric film. As he told Latino Review, "I firmly believe [Death Race] is the best, most spectacular car action I've ever seen in a film… I don't know if I'll ever do another car movie after this." For a project that's been juggled since 2003, I think a Spy Hunter movie is not just unlikely with Anderson dropping out, but it seems wholly irrelevant today.

Check This Out: The Real Guts of Lightning McQueen From Cars!

Check This Out: The Guts of Lightning McQueen From Cars!

Just because I'm a huge Pixar fanboy and just because I thought everyone could use some fun to kick off their Monday morning, I'm featuring this fantastic drawing from artist Jake Parker. Courtesy of his official blog (via the wonderful Cartoon Brew), we've got a look at Parker's "design" for the real human anatomy inside of Lightning McQueen from Pixar's Cars. He explains that, "you have these cars, but with actual fleshy eyes, with irises, and mouths of teeth and tongues. Where does the machine end and the flesh begin? So, to make everything piece together a little better in my head I drew up what I think the internal structures of Lightning McQueen might look like." And that's where Parker decided to draw out the guts inside and let me tell you, it's definitely worth a quick look!

Voltron Movie Finally Coming Together With a Smaller Budget

Voltron

Remember when everyone thought Cloverfield was a Voltron movie? Well back in August last year, Fox announced that they were moving forward with their own Voltron: Defender of the Universe film, putting that Cloverfield rumor to rest. One year and we've finally got an update from Fox - they're dumping the project but Relativity Media has come to the rescue. That production company is still looking to develop the film, but with a more constrained budget that implements cost-effective technology like Zack Snyder used in 300. Apparently part of the problem was that it was troublesome for Fox to originally get the rights, but now it seems like it's ready to go with Justin Marks' screenplay still intact as well.

R.L. Stine's Goosebumps Books Headed to the Big Screen

Goosebumps

Sony Pictures picked up the rights to Scholastic's Goosebumps series of children's horror books written by R.L. Stine and has hired two writers to adapt them into a feature film. I knew this was coming, considering these books are huge with kids and have sold nearly as many copies as Harry Potter. I actually remember reading a lot of them when I was younger, with the embossed Goosebumps logo being one of the most prominent memories - you'll know exactly what I mean if you've ever read them. Experienced screenwriter duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, of films like Ed Wood, Man on the Moon, Agent Cody Banks, and 1408 previously, have been hired to write the live-action adaptation for Sony.
